How to read Env Check utility output
Problem: Running the Env Check utility (aka Environment Check) for installation or troubleshooting and the tool is reporting errors.
Solution(s): Here are some of the common errors and possible solutions.
Error: The connection attempt timed out
- SSL over LDAP not configured
- Invalid/wrong hostname
- Invalid/wrong IP address
- Firewall issue
Error: Invalid user id or password
- Use LDAP browser to make sure you have the correct context for user
- Copy-n-paste DN (distinguishedName) to make sure no typos
- Check "Show Password" box and make sure no typos in password field
Full DNS test failure
- Client machine running Env Check utility cannot resolve DNS names
- Input the Domain field incorrectly
ERROR: Reverse lookup failed for XXX
- Fix it by creating a PTR record for the LDAP server
- May need to create a Reverse Lookup Zone in DNS to accomplish
ERROR: (DNS) - missing PTR record (reverse DNS) for domain controller: XXX
- Fix it by creating a PTR record for the LDAP server
- May need to create a Reverse Lookup Zone in DNS to accomplish
ERROR: missing PTR record (reverse DNS)
- Fix it by removing Host A record with wrong IP address
- Typically under root domain (same as parent folder)
ERROR: javax.naming.CommunicationException: simple bind failed: X.X.X.X:636
- Cannot connect to that server over SSL (port 636)
- If AD Certificate Services were enabled recently, server may need to be restarted to pick up certificate
- Server possibly has an issue picking up SSL certificate, check Windows Event Viewer for more details
- Server possibly doesn't exist anymore and needs to be removed from DNS
