Disable Group Search for File Services

Issue:

In the past Unified Workspace (formerly webNetwork) required having to manually add some search indexes to prevent slowness issues in various parts of webNetwork, most notably (webStorage) File Services.

When a user authenticates to Unified Workspace, the system searches all of the groups the user is a member of, looking to see what Storage Providers (formerly File Nodes) the user has access to.  Depending on the size of the Active Directory Tree, layout, and number of groups, the searching could take a substantial amount of time.  Thus the use of the search indexes, to speed up the searching.


Solution:

As of 6.4.1.x the 8090 management console has two new options in the settings. Enable Group Search and Enable AD Indexing.  These will allow you to control the enabling of the auto search index creation along with the group search feature.  You will want to enable the AD Indexing first and let things sit for about 24 hours while your Domain Controllers index the attributes.  Then enable Group Search to take advantage of the enhanced searching.  If you enable both and have a large environment your login times may be slower until the Domain Controllers get everything indexed.  

In 6.4.0.x we automatically added the indexes upon startup and enabled the group search.  If this is not desired it can be disabled.  To disable support for Group Searching, the following parameter can be added to lax.nl.java.option.additional line of the webnetwork.lax file : –DDisableGroupSearch=true
(This parameter is also valid for 6.3.0.x, as of 6.3.0.246.)
